Drawing influence from my personal favourite entry in the series, Project Zero 3, these bits play on the classic horror trope of taking a familiar, safe location and making it distinctly unsafe. There are moments in Maiden of Black Water that are up there with the best of the series.

The interactive horror genre is perhaps stronger than ever, and a new Project Zero pretty much couldn’t fail, right? Well.ĭon’t get me wrong. As the first English language brand-new entry into the main series since the fantastic Project Zero 3: The Tormented, Maiden of Black Water has a lot to live up to. A mostly-digital-only release (it has a ludicrously expensive physical special edition, but other than that it’s eShop only). So now we have Project Zero: Maiden of Black Water. That received a mixed reception, although I recently played it on a New3DS and was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it.

Alongside that we had Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir, which uses the 3DS as an augmented reality Camera Obscura, allowing you to view ghosts as if they’re in the room with you. This had some bizarre design decisions, involving ‘sexing up’ the two mid-teenage girl protagonists, making for a rather strange experience. Then we had a Wii remake of the second Project Zero game, Crimson Butterfly. We had Mask of the Lunar Eclipse (Wii), which never officially got a release outside of Japan. The last few releases have been a strangely mixed bag. That said, it will likely be an enjoyable experience for players looking for something more casual.After flitting about from console to console for a while, the Project Zero series (Fatal Frame in the US) seems to have found a permanent home with Nintendo. Though SCHiM is an engaging puzzle game with a good deal of narrative to experience, it is unlikely to challenge the more skillful players out there. Despite the simplistic nature of the art, the use of different colors in each area gives the game a lot of visual variety. Since the shadows are cast in strong relief, it is easy to see where the player can and can’t jump. The game is presented in a monochromatic art style that is both distinctive and also makes the game more accessible. The game world is full of moving objects casting shadows, which the player can use to move across areas that would otherwise have no shadows to leap into. The player must traverse the world in search of its human but can only move in the shadows. SCHiM sees the player take control of a SCHiM who has lost its thing - a human being.
